MANILA, Philippines—The night’s most daring stunt turned out to be Sharon Cuneta’s onstage mishap—outshining even daughter KC Concepcion’s air dance with Sam Milby, and Ai Ai de las Alas’ upside-down, hamster-wheel acrobatics.
Known as the country’s Megastar, Cuneta promised to celebrate her 45th birthday with a bang. Instead a loud thud echoed in the middle of her birthday concert at the Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday night. (The show will be aired on ABS-CBN on Jan. 23.)
In the middle of a rock ’n’ roll number with Ramon Jacinto and Billy Crawford, she made a wrong move and landed on the floor.
Billy was stunned, but swiftly helped Cuneta on her feet. RJ, trouper that he is, remained unruffled and continued strumming his guitar.
Cuneta later joked and asked the Araneta crowd: “Kaya n’yo yon? Ako lang makakagawa no’n. (Can you top that? Only I can do that.)”
Turned out, it was no laughing matter.
She didn’t complain throughout the three-hour show, but later felt neck and back pains while in her dressing room and had to be rushed to the hospital, recounted makeup artist Fanny Serrano.
Cuneta was discharged after one night and has been resting at home for the past few days.
Serrano recalled that Cuneta was looking forward to the show, but was also reluctant to leave adopted son Miguel, who was sick, at home.
Serrano said that in spite of the fall, Cuneta remained in high spirits during the show.
“It was filled with numerous highlights,” he said.
Serrano himself had a splashy song-and-dance number with Manny Castañeda and Chokoleit—backed up by the Club Mwah “Girls.”
Director Jose Javier Reyes was impressed by the high-flying act of KC and Sam—in a number choreographed by Georcelle Dapat.
Hanging on red cloth, KC dangled in the air, while Sam caught her with his bare back.
Sam later admitted that KC’s part was “harder than mine.”
De las Alas initially claimed that she couldn’t make it to Araneta, but surprised Cuneta with a bodacious dance number in what looked like a giant hamster wheel.
Wearing what she described as a glittery “malling” outfit, De las Alas ended the routine by hanging upside down from the “wheel of misfortune” (which tore a hole on her stockings).
Cuneta said she was touched by De las Alas’ effort.
