“I’m back, I’m alive,” were the first words that KC Concepcion uttered during her press con for World Food Programme (WFP) at White House resto-bar near ABS-CBN last January 26. As it is, she belatedly realized the risk involved during her recent relief mission to Uganda. When asked if she ever thought that she could have died during the trip, the singer-actress-TV host replied, “There was a drill. They asked us to wear bulletproof vests and that was the moment that it really hit me that there's a possibility. While we were having dinner, there were a few gunshots because somebody had stolen someone's livestock which is yung livelihood talaga nila dun.”

But she was quick to clarify that she knew what she was getting into ever since she accepted the responsibility of being an ambassadress of WFP three years ago. “The nice thing about WFP is that they don’t sugar-coat anything. They really present the level of risk. So this fight against hunger is really, parang hindi pikit-mata [kundi] nakadilat ka na papasok sa ganitong trabaho. But it wasn’t until that day that you actually realize [that your life may be in danger]. Tsaka kasi kapag nandito kami sa missions [in some parts of Central Mindanao] madami kang nakikitang army, may security kang nakikita. Doon po ‘di ko alam kung meron, pero as far as I can see, wala pong mga armas yung mga tao and even UN agents are not allowed to bring armor in our vehicles.”

Although her mom Sharon Cuneta worries about her safety, KC claimed that the former knows that she’s really passionate about her humanitarian work. “Yung mommy ko kasi very pure yung heart niya. Masasabi kong alam niya that my work is coming from a very pure place, a very genuine place, so supportive siya. She's probably scared also every time I leave, but I know that my mother knows that I’m doing this work for something good that isn’t about me. Siguro kahit papa’no natanggap na din niya na meron akong streak na ganon. Lagi nga niya sinasabi na mas risk-taker at adventurous daw ako kaysa sa kanya.”

KC was grateful that she got the chance to see the worst and the best parts of Uganda during her five-day immersion. “When I got there sa Moroto, dun mo makikita 'yong mga character talaga. Parang it's like the heart of Africa, na parang siguro sa part na 'yon, which is iba sa the rest of the country. Parang masasabi mo na pareho sa mga images na makikita mo from the sinaunang panahon pa. Talagang very basic 'yong way of living nila dun. We spend hours sitting and really living with them, talking, cooking with them. Yung lola nagbibigay sa akin ng mga dried fruit peels to boil kasi akala niya apo niya ako kasi partially blind siya,” she said.

But more than anything else, KC said that the most important part of her mission is to be able to learn new ways on how to improve the quality life of our fellow Filipinos living in the impoverished areas in Mindanao. “The reason why naging maganda yung mission is because of the purchase for progress activities. Nag-harvest kami ng mais sa big fields nila. Yung last na pinuntahan namin dun makikita na wala talaga sila. [Pero sa ibang part naman] basta makapag-harvest sila, dun sila nagiging supplier ng coffee company at breweries, so nagkaroon sila ng means of living. In the same way na sa Central Mindanao you’ll see Davao lahat meron sila dun, business is booming. Pero if you go a little further, makikita niyo rin yung difference.”
